University of the Philippines

“Shaping minds that shape the nation.”

As the country’s national university, the University of the Philippines takes pride in being a pioneer in higher education through academic excellence, outstanding research and relevant public service. Established in 1908, UP started as a small Manila campus with few colleges. Today, the university is composed of eight (8) constituent universities spread throughout 17 campuses across the archipelago.

UP Baguio was established in 1961 as a unit of the UP System. It was a regional campus of UP Diliman for nearly four decades, before becoming the 7th constituent university of the UP System in 2002. It serves as the hub of knowledge generation and human resource training and development in Northern Luzon, as it contributes in nurturing and developing innovative programs in the arts and sciences. Furthermore, over the past decades, UP Baguio has developed a particular niche in the field of indigenous studies.

The College of Social Sciences (CSS) was established on December 2, 2002. The college, formerly called Division of Social Sciences, is configured into three departments – History and Philosophy; Anthropology, Sociology and Psychology, and Economics and Political Sciences. The Institute of Management, formerly known as the Management Sciences Division, was integrated with the college.

The Institute of Management aims to address global challenges and establish and maintain itself as a professional management education center. In pursuit of this Vision and Mission, the Institute aims to:

  1. Develop and enrich a responsive, updated and relevant curriculum in a globalized context;
  2. Attract and maintain a pool of qualified and professionally competent academic staff;
  3. Continuously pursue a highly selective process of student admission;
  4. Upgrade its learning facilities; and,
  5. Provide an integrated management research and extension.

The Institute offers two programs: Bachelor of Science in Management Economics (BSME) as an undergraduate program, and Master of Management as a generalist graduate program.

The BSME program was instituted in 2010, welcomed its first students in 2011, and successfully saw its first graduates in 2015. Admission to the program is determined by the UP College Admissions Test (UPCAT). During the COVID-19 pandemic, the UP College Admission (UPCA) was administered instead. The Institute is committed to train students that embody the attributes of the ideal UP graduate. In addition to the General Education program, students likewise receive instruction in the fundamental management aspects of operations, marketing, human resources and finance, with a strong foundation in economics. As UP Baguio is also a research university, BSME students are also equipped to do research in business, management or economics.
